Before becoming a mother, I would often contemplate the “dropped stitch” philosophy. I would hear older women talk about it and I had a cursory understanding of it, but how do you teach this principle to a young child without nagging?

From toddlerhood, I’ve been training my little girl to be observant, to see and hear, to watch and do. Granted, these lessons are typically mommy narrating what mommy is doing, but she has been listening and as she becomes older and more independent, these lessons are taking hold. (more...)

Gem for Today: Go Ahead, Knock Yourself Out!

Have you ever wondered why you get so many red lights when you are trying to drive quickly? Just when you thought you would make it before the light changes to red, the car in front of you begins to move ever so slowly and the next thing you know you have to wait at yet another traffic light.

Well maybe you got up a little late and you are trying to make up for lost time but the cars around you seem to be cruising along as if to say “Go ahead knock yourself out – we will all meet at the next light anyway”. Above all isn’t it true that the old proverb “More haste less speed” often applies in these situations? (more...)

_No longer does it take a personal life-changing event like a massive heart attack or a positive test result for Stage IV cancer for people to realize the need for them to engage in healthy lifestyle behaviors. With increased technology, the media continues to provide the most up-to-date information on health. The silent effects of unhealthful practices on those who have neglected their bodies are frequently revealed through reports on the daily news. However, the link between health behaviors and actual health status may not always be so clearly defined in newspapers and television programs.
